Question & Thought for November 12th, 2015!!!

Good Thursday Morning!
1. Question – Should churches stick to theological issues and ignore national issues?
2. Thought – On September 1, 1931, Germany invaded Poland and World War II began. Dietrich was now vulnerable to military call-up, but until the call came he involved himself in Confessing Church activities and wrote letters to former students who were in the army.
As far as the Confessing Church, Dietrich was still pressing its leadership to take a stronger stand on controversial issues. This time he wanted the Church to speak out against the war itself. What did it have to lose, he reasoned. Yet many of the church leaders were frightened of the consequences. No patriotic German was speaking out against what had turned out to be a very successful series of military actions. The leadership of the Church wanted to stick to theological issues, and thus in Dietrich’s eyes they were becoming increasingly irrelevant. At one time he had been adamant about the need for a theological resistance to the Reich Church, but events had gone beyond that now. It was too late for the Church to confine itself to such narrow concerns. (The Story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer by Michael Van Dyke)

Question & Thought for May 27th, 2015!!!

Good Wednesday Morning!!!
1. Question – Is there someone you always wanted to read about but never found the time? (I always heard about Dietrich Bonhoeffer and now I read about him. Awesome man! I hope to meet him someday.)
2. Thought from The Story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer by Michael Van Dyke:
Dietrich found himself waking up most mornings with a prayer on his lips. He was praying more than ever before, yet he felt no special sense of God’s presence in the prison. He only felt his responsibility to be a man of God and, if necessary, to suffer where God had placed him. He was starting to think that true faith did not involve feelings at all – that it was instead the God-given ability to respond in love to the world as it was. Faith was no escape hatch from the power of evil men; true faith often placed one directly in the grip of evil. Hadn’t Jesus Himself provided a demonstration of this truth?
[Don’t know about you, but when I read, ‘that true faith did not involve feelings at all – that it was instead the God-given ability to respond in love to the world as it was.’ I jumped. Faith is not a feeling – Plain as day!!! Makes ya think about faith!! My ‘feel good religion’ went away and my reasoning set in and I got a glimpse of where Bonhoeffer was going with this thought. He’s onto something here. Wonderful – Just wonderful!]

”Why do you waste your time praying for these animals? They certainly don’t reciprocate your goodwill.”
“I don’t pray for them in order to gain their friendship,” Dietrich answered.

Question & Thought for May 23rd, 2013!!!

Hello Memorial Day Weekend!!!
1. Question – Take a good look at the world today and are we seeing similarities of 1941 in 2015?
2. Thought – The year 1941 saw a dramatic escalation of events in the war and within Germany itself. In April, German troops invaded Yugoslavia and Greece. On May 23, most of the remaining leadership of the Confessing Church was arrested. On June 22, German troops invaded the Soviet Union. On September 19, a decree was issued that required all German Jews to wear a yellow star stitched to their clothing. In October, the first gas chambers were installed in Auschwitz, Poland. On December 7, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, bringing the United States fully into the war. And in January of 1942, the Nazi leadership agreed to implement a “Final Solution” policy that called for the extermination of all Jews in Germany and occupied territories. (The Story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer by Michael Van Dyke)
“Many of us in government would like to know what parents think about this intrusion in their family by government. We’re going to fight in the courts. The rights of parents and the rights of family take precedence over those in Washington-based bureaucrats and social engineers.” (Ronald Reagan 1983)

EnJOY the weekend! Proud of you Alana!
