Good Tuesday Morning!!
1. Question – What is Dr, Blount’s remedy for prevention of dehydration and cramps?
2. Thought – When the temperature outside is greater than 85 degrees, do the following to protect yourself:
1. One hour before exercising, take one AlkaSeltzer and one five grain aspirin. Drink water until you pee.
2. Take to the match one gallon of tap water. Purchase a 6-pack cooler with a flat top and load 1/3 full of ice and cover with water. Place a hand-sized towel in the cooler. Also take several tee-shirts and two bath towels.
3. During every crossover, sit down and drink a significant amount of water. Ring out the hand towel and place it on top of your head and neck. Replace the towel in the cool box and dry your hands and racquet. Sit on the cool box if no chair provided. Take the allowed 90 seconds to cool and hydrate yourself.
4. If you follow this program, you are not likely to get dehydration, cramps, heat prostration, or stroke. You are unlikely to need hospitalization and IV saline.
5. Should you get cramps after the match, go to your room and get in a tub of room temperature water and add several bags of ice. Stay in the tub for 10 minutes. This will stop the cramps and keep them from returning. Also continue to drink plenty of tap water. Do not drink iced beverages. Stay in the air conditioning for several hours.
6. If someone passes out, carry them to the hospital immediately. (John Blount, M.D.)
